In a tragic and shocking incident, at least 12 tourists were
injured on Tuesday following a terrorist attack in the picturesque Baisaran
valley near Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir. The peaceful region, known for its
breathtaking views and popularity among tourists, was thrown into chaos after
gunshots rang out, sending visitors and locals into a panic.
According to early reports from the Jammu and Kashmir
Police, gunfire was heard around the Baisaran meadows, a scenic site located a
few kilometers from Pahalgam town. The valley, often referred to as ‘Mini
Switzerland’ for its lush green pastures and pine-covered hills, is only
accessible by foot or horseback, adding to the challenge for emergency
responders.
Eyewitness Accounts
A survivor of the attack, speaking over the phone to PTI,
recounted the horrifying moments when unidentified gunmen suddenly opened fire
on tourists from a close distance. “My husband was shot in the head. We were
walking when the shooting began. It was terrifying,” the woman said. Several
others around her were also hit by bullets.
Locals immediately sprang into action, helping the injured
down from the highland meadows using ponies and on foot. Authorities soon
pressed helicopters into service for a quicker evacuation of the critically
injured. Medical teams and additional security personnel have been deployed to
support the rescue operation.
Security Forces Launch Operation
Following the attack, the area was swiftly cordoned off by
Indian Army troops, the Jammu and Kashmir Police, and paramilitary forces. A
search and cordon operation is underway to track down the attackers. Although
the identity of the perpetrators is not yet officially confirmed, initial
suspicion points toward Pakistan-backed militants, according to officials.
BJP leader Ravinder Raina strongly condemned the attack,
calling it a cowardly act by Pakistani terrorists. “These terrorists cannot
face our brave soldiers, so they attack innocent, unarmed civilians. The
injured tourists are being treated, and the perpetrators along with their
handlers will be brought to justice,” he said.
Political Condemnation Across the Board
Leaders across the political spectrum expressed outrage and
sorrow. Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti took to social media platform X to
denounce the attack. “I strongly condemn the cowardly attack on tourists in
Pahalgam. Such violence is unacceptable and must be denounced,” she wrote.
Mufti also emphasized the rarity of such incidents in
tourist-heavy regions of Kashmir and called for a thorough probe. “Kashmir has
always welcomed tourists with open arms. This attack is deeply concerning.
Authorities must examine any security lapses and ensure that such attacks do
not happen again.”
National Conference leader Omar Abdullah echoed similar
sentiments, urging the government to prioritize visitor safety and crack down
on those behind such violent acts.
Context and Previous Incidents
This isn’t the first time tourists or migrant workers have
come under attack in Jammu and Kashmir. Just last year, terrorists opened fire
at a construction site in Ganderbal’s Gagangir area, killing a doctor and six
workers. That attack was also carried out at a site with a presence of
non-local laborers, raising concerns about a pattern in targeting outsiders.
Current Situation
As of Tuesday evening, several of the injured tourists are
undergoing treatment at local hospitals. Officials are yet to provide a full
update on their conditions. Meanwhile, security forces continue their search
for the attackers in the forested areas surrounding Baisaran.
The government has assured that those behind this brutal act
will be identified and punished. Additional safety measures are also expected
to be rolled out in tourist areas to prevent further incidents.
