Over 1,200 gastrointestinal specialists from across
the globe gathered in Mumbai on Friday for the 22nd edition of the
Mumbai LIVE Endoscopy Course, focusing on cutting-edge advances in GI care,
especially artificial intelligence (AI) and robotic-assisted
technologies.
Organized by the Endoscopy Research Foundation, the
three-day academic event (April 18–20) includes hands-on training, scientific
symposia, and lectures on emerging endoscopic therapies. This year’s
theme emphasizes minimally invasive procedures, early cancer
detection, and the practical integration of AI in clinical settings.
Highlights of the Conference:
- AI
in Cancer Detection: Technologies like EndoBrain analyze
real-time, high-definition endoscopic images to flag subtle or hidden
lesions, allowing for early, non-surgical removal.
- Peroral
Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM): A minimally invasive treatment for achalasia
cardia was demonstrated using EndoFlip, a pressure-sensitive
tool that confirms the success of muscle relaxation in the esophagus.
- Thulium
Laser Lithotripsy: Used via a cholangioscope to break down and
remove large bile duct stones without surgery, reducing trauma and
hospital stays.
30 Years of Innovation
This year also marks 30 years since the Mumbai LIVE
course began in 1993. Dr Amit Maydeo, chairman at Sir HN Reliance
Foundation Hospital and the mind behind this event, noted the exponential
growth in GI endoscopy—from basic fibreoptic scopes to AI-driven robotic
platforms.
Safety & Accessibility
Sessions throughout the event also focused on the clinical
safety, scalability, and cost-efficiency of these innovations
for the Indian healthcare landscape. Experts emphasized the need for structured
training to help these life-changing technologies reach beyond elite
hospitals to everyday clinics.
“These tools are already transforming outcomes,” said Dr
Maydeo. “Now the focus is on making them accessible and affordable for
all.”
