Apple has rolled out the iOS 18.3 update, bringing several
improvements, but the most exciting one is the integration of Starlink
satellite support. In partnership with Elon Musk’s Starlink and T-Mobile, Apple
is now testing satellite-based messaging, allowing iPhone users to stay
connected even in areas with no mobile network.
How It Benefits iPhone Users
With this new update, select iPhone 14 models can now access
SpaceX’s Starlink Direct-to-Cell feature, letting users send text messages via
satellite. This is a game-changer for those traveling to remote areas or facing
network issues, ensuring they can still communicate with family, friends, or
emergency services.
How to Use Starlink for Messaging
Since the feature is still in the testing phase, only a
limited number of users have access. Here’s what’s needed to try it out:
- Update
to iOS 18.3 – Make sure the latest software is installed.
- Check
Cellular Settings – A new option for satellite messaging should appear
under mobile network settings.
- Point
the iPhone Toward the Sky – Just like other satellite communication
methods, users may need to align their device with the sky to establish a
connection.
- Send
Messages – Once connected, users can text emergency contacts or loved
ones using Starlink.
Right now, this feature is only available in the U.S., but
Apple and its partners are working on expanding it to more regions soon.
