Mohanlal’s much-anticipated sequel L2 Empuraan
continues its impressive run at the box office, emerging as the highest-grossing
Malayalam film of all time. Despite facing controversy, the film has
remained steady in its performance and has now crossed ₹91 crore in
India alone.
According to trade tracking portal Sacnilk, L2 Empuraan
earned around ₹3 crore on its second Friday, pushing the total
domestic net collection to ₹91.25 crore. The film had a spectacular
start, opening at ₹21 crore on March 27, and collected ₹88.25 crore in
its first week. Although the daily earnings have now dipped into single digits,
the film has maintained consistent momentum at the box office.
Record-Breaking Success
Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, the film is a
sequel to the 2019 blockbuster Lucifer. Since its release, L2
Empuraan has broken multiple records, becoming the first Malayalam film
to hit ₹100 crore in worldwide share. The film has also surpassed the ₹250
crore mark globally, overtaking Manjummel Boys to claim the title of
the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever.
Additionally, it outperformed the opening weekend numbers of
Chhaava, starring Vicky Kaushal, aided by its Thursday release
advantage. L2 Empuraan now also features in the list of highest-grossing
Indian films of 2025.
Amid Controversy
The film hasn’t had a smooth ride, though. It sparked
controversy due to its fictional recreation of the 2002 Gujarat riots,
which plays a crucial role in the backstory of Prithviraj’s character, Zayed
Masood. The backlash led the filmmakers to voluntarily implement 24 cuts
to tone down the sensitive content.
Addressing the issue, actor and politician Suresh Gopi
denied allegations that the ruling party had pressured the makers, stating in a
parliamentary session that the team made the decision independently. The film
features a star-studded cast including Tovino Thomas and Manju
Warrier, adding to its mass appeal.
As the second weekend begins, all eyes are on whether L2
Empuraan will continue its historic run and potentially breach the ₹100
crore mark domestically in the coming days.
