L2: Empuraan Creates History – Mohanlal's Film Shatters Malayalam Box Office Records on Day 1

Mohanlal's highly anticipated sequel, L2: Empuraan, has taken the Malayalam film industry by storm, recording a historic ₹22 crore collection on its opening day. Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, the film has now set the benchmark for the biggest opening in Malayalam cinema history.

Box Office Records: A New Chapter for Malayalam Cinema

According to trade tracker Sacnilk, L2: Empuraan collected ₹22 crore net in India on its first day, surpassing all previous records:

  • Malayalam collection: ₹19.45 crore
  • Telugu collection: ₹1.2 crore
  • Hindi, Tamil, Kannada (combined): ₹1.35 crore

The film registered a massive 60% occupancy in Malayalam screenings, with strongholds like Kochi and Kozhikode recording over 90% sold-out shows.

Breaking Previous Records

Before L2: Empuraan, the highest opening for a Malayalam film was:

  1. The Goat Life (2024) – ₹8.95 crore
  2. Lucifer (2019) – ₹6.10 crore

With Empuraan crossing ₹22 crore, it has more than doubled the previous record, proving the increasing box office potential of Malayalam cinema.

Will L2: Empuraan Cross ₹200 Crore?

Malayalam films, despite their strong content, haven't always dominated box office numbers. Until 2019, no Malayalam film had even crossed ₹100 crore worldwide. That changed with Lucifer. More recently, Manjummel Boys became the first Malayalam film to cross ₹200 crore.

Given its mass action appeal and extended weekend boost, L2: Empuraan is on track to break the ₹200 crore barrier, making it a landmark film for Mollywood.

About L2: Empuraan

L2: Empuraan is the highly awaited sequel to Lucifer (2019) and the second part of an ambitious trilogy. The film blends socio-political drama with intense action, with Mohanlal reprising his iconic role.

Star Cast:

  • Mohanlal
  • Prithviraj Sukumaran
  • Tovino Thomas
  • Abhimanyu Singh
  • Indrajith Sukumaran
  • Manju Warrier

The film has been released in multiple languages, including Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada, but its core success remains in its home industry.

What’s Next?

While mass action films tend to see a drop in collections after the first weekend, strong word of mouth could keep Empuraan soaring in the coming days. If it maintains momentum, it might become the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever.

Stay tuned for more box office updates!
