New Delhi, April 7, 2025 — The price of cooking gas
has been hiked by ₹50 per cylinder, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural
Gas Hardeep Singh Puri announced on Monday. The new prices will apply to
both general category consumers and PM Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY)
beneficiaries.
Under the revised rates, the 14.2-kg LPG cylinder
will now cost ₹853 for general users, up from ₹803. For Ujjwala scheme
beneficiaries, the price has increased from ₹503 to ₹553 per cylinder.
“This is a step which we will review as we go along,” said
Minister Puri, adding that the government assesses fuel prices every two to
three weeks. He emphasized that the hike comes amid global crude price
fluctuations and inventory considerations.
Excise Duty on Petrol and Diesel Increased
In a separate development, the Centre also announced a ₹2
per litre increase in excise duty on both petrol and diesel. As per
the official notification, the revised duty—₹13 per litre on petrol and ₹10 on
diesel—will come into effect from April 8, 2025.
However, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas clarified
that this increase will not be passed on to consumers. "PSU Oil
Marketing Companies have informed that there will be no increase in retail
prices of Petrol and Diesel, subsequent to the increase effected in Excise Duty
Rates today," the Ministry posted on X (formerly Twitter).
No Immediate Impact on Fuel Retail Prices
Minister Puri explained that although international crude
oil prices had recently dropped to around $60 per barrel, domestic oil
marketing companies continue to carry older inventory purchased at higher
prices—averaging around $75 per barrel. “In a deregulated market, you
can expect the oil marketing companies to adjust prices in line with global
trends,” he said.
