Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal

India firmly rejected China’s creation of two new counties in Hotan Prefecture, emphasizing that the move does not affect India's sovereignty or legitimize China's illegal occupation.

“We have seen the announcement pertaining to the establishment of two new counties in Hotan Prefecture of China. Parts of the jurisdiction of these so-called counties fall in India’s Union Territory of Ladakh,” said Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, on Friday, January 3, 2024.

India’s Response

In a strong statement, Mr. Jaiswal reiterated India’s position on the region.

“We have never accepted the illegal Chinese occupation of Indian territory in this area. Creation of new counties will neither have a bearing on India’s long-standing and consistent position regarding our sovereignty over the area nor lend legitimacy to China’s illegal and forcible occupation of the same.”

India’s Stand on Brahmaputra Mega Dam

In another significant development, India reacted to China’s plans to construct a mega dam on the Brahmaputra River (known as Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibet). Mr. Jaiswal assured that New Delhi is monitoring the situation closely to safeguard India’s interests.

“We will continue to monitor and take necessary measures to protect our interests,” he said, urging China to consider the impact on downstream states like Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.

Concerns Raised

India expressed apprehensions about the dam’s potential adverse effects:

  • Impact on Lower Riparian States: Both Arunachal Pradesh and Assam might face ecological and economic disruptions.
  • Need for Transparency: “As a lower riparian state with established user rights to the river's waters, we have consistently raised concerns through expert and diplomatic channels,” Mr. Jaiswal noted.

He further emphasized the importance of consultation with downstream states and urged China to ensure their interests are not harmed.

Other Diplomatic Concerns

  1. Nimisha Priya Case in Yemen
India is closely following the case of Nimisha Priya, sentenced in Yemen.

“The government is extending all possible help in the matter,” Mr. Jaiswal stated.

  2. Hindu Monk’s Bail Denial in Bangladesh
Responding to the bail denial of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das, Mr. Jaiswal remarked:

“India expects a fair trial for the individuals who were arrested in Bangladesh.”

India’s assertive stance reflects its commitment to safeguarding sovereignty and regional interests. From addressing China’s territorial claims to monitoring transboundary river projects and advocating for its citizens abroad, New Delhi continues to prioritize its strategic and diplomatic objectives.
