In the aftermath of the deadliest terrorist strike in
Jammu and Kashmir in recent years, security agencies have released sketches
of three suspects believed to be behind the Pahalgam massacre, which
left 26 civilians dead, mostly tourists, and over 20 injured.
The attack occurred on Tuesday afternoon at Baisaran
meadow, a scenic hilltop in Pahalgam often referred to as ‘mini
Switzerland’, popular among tourists for its lush green landscapes. Armed
terrorists reportedly descended from the surrounding hills and opened fire on
civilians, in an act that has sent shockwaves across the nation.
Suspects Identified, Code Names Revealed
According to officials cited in a PTI report, the
attackers have been identified as:
- Asif
Fauji (alias Asif)
- Suleman
Shah (alias Moosa)
- Abu
Talha (alias Yunus)
The sketches were drawn based on descriptions
provided by survivors. Authorities suspect that the assailants crossed into
the valley from Kishtwar via Kokernag in South Kashmir, before launching
the assault at Baisaran.
Terror Group Claims Responsibility
The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy outfit of the
banned Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), has claimed
responsibility for the attack. Sources believe the timing may have been
influenced by a provocative statement from the Pakistan Army chief,
leading to increased terror activity in the region.
Swift Government Response
The gravity of the incident prompted Prime Minister
Narendra Modi to cut short his state visit to Saudi Arabia and
return to Delhi. Upon arrival, the PM held an emergency meeting with NSA
Ajit Doval and senior officials to assess the situation.
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah immediately
flew to Kashmir and visited the attack site in Pahalgam. Officials confirmed
that a massive manhunt is underway and counter-terror operations have
been intensified in South Kashmir and adjoining areas.
Condemnation and Global Reactions
The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from
leaders across the country and abroad:
- US
President Donald Trump expressed his deepest condolences and
assured full support to India in its fight against terrorism.
- Pakistan's
Foreign Office issued a formal statement expressing concern
over the loss of lives, while Indian officials have criticized Pakistan
for its alleged support to cross-border terrorism.
Nation Stands United
The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of grief, anger, and
solidarity from citizens and celebrities alike. Security across Jammu and
Kashmir has been heightened, with a renewed focus on infiltration routes and
sleeper cells active in the region.
The operation to bring the perpetrators to justice is
ongoing, as the nation mourns the loss of innocent lives and stands united
in its resolve against terror.
