Just a day after silencing retirement rumors, Rohit
Sharma has provided further insights into his future in international
cricket. While the Indian captain has made it clear that he has no plans to
retire from ODIs, he has also refrained from making any commitments
regarding the 2027 ICC World Cup in South Africa.
Taking It One Day at a Time
Following India’s Champions Trophy victory over New
Zealand, the 37-year-old opener addressed speculation about his career
and stated that he prefers to take things as they come rather than
planning too far ahead.
“Right now, I am taking things as they come. It wouldn’t be
fair for me to think too far ahead. At this moment, my focus is on playing well
and maintaining the right mindset. I don’t want to draw any lines and say
whether I will or won’t play in the 2027 World Cup,” Rohit said in an interview
with JioHotstar.
He further emphasized his love for the game and the
joy he finds in being part of the team.
“For now, I am enjoying my cricket and the time I spend with
this team. I hope my teammates enjoy my presence as well. That’s all that
matters at this point.”
Retirement Rumors Put to Rest
After India's Champions Trophy win, Rohit put an end
to all retirement talks during the post-match press conference.
"One more thing. I am not going to retire from this
format. Just to make sure there are no rumors spread moving forward. Thank you
so much," Rohit asserted, making his stance clear.
His statement comes after Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja
also dismissed speculation about their retirement, confirming that they will continue
playing international cricket.
‘Don’t Take Us Lightly’— Rohit Sharma’s Message to
Opponents
Apart from addressing his future, Rohit Sharma also sent a strong
message to other teams, emphasizing that India should never be
underestimated.
"I don’t want to dictate how other teams should
perceive us. The only thing I want is for them to never take us lightly. Even
if we are five wickets down, we have the ability to fight back and turn the
game around. Until the last ball of the match is bowled, our opponents should
always feel the pressure of playing against us."
He further explained that India’s resilience and
determination are key aspects of their identity.
"When we bowl, this team never gives up. That is the
kind of legacy we want to create and leave behind. We take immense pride in
being a clinical and well-organized team. Every player in our squad knows
exactly what is expected of them and how to execute their role. When other
teams watch us play, I want them to recognize our resilience and belief—the
mindset that we can win from any situation."
Rohit’s Form and Comeback
Earlier this year, Rohit faced criticism over his form,
especially after stepping down from the Sydney Test against Australia.
His international future was questioned by many.
However, he bounced back in style with a century
against England in the second ODI and carried that momentum into the
Champions Trophy. Though his performances in the initial matches of the
tournament were not remarkable, he stepped up in the final, scoring 76
runs off 84 balls, including seven fours and three sixes, playing a
crucial role in India’s triumph over New Zealand.
What’s Next for Rohit Sharma?
While Rohit Sharma remains non-committal about the 2027
World Cup, his current focus is on staying fit, performing well,
and enjoying his cricket. His leadership has been instrumental in India’s
success, and with key players like Kohli and Jadeja also continuing, Indian
cricket looks set for a strong run in upcoming tournaments.
For now, fans can take solace in the fact that Rohit
Sharma is here to stay, at least in the near future. Whether he plays in
the 2027 World Cup or not remains to be seen, but for now, Indian
cricket continues to thrive under his leadership.
