Mumbai Indians (MI) have a long-standing tradition of
identifying and nurturing young talent, and their latest discovery, Vignesh
Puthur, made a lasting impact in IPL 2025. The young Kerala spinner, introduced
as an impact substitute, played a crucial role in MI’s clash against Chennai
Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. His three-wicket haul helped
MI stay competitive in a tightly contested match, earning him recognition from
none other than team owner Nita Ambani.
A Dream Debut for Vignesh Puthur
Facing the five-time IPL champions CSK, Mumbai Indians
needed something special, and Vignesh Puthur delivered. The 24-year-old
dismissed key batters Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube, and Deepak Hooda, finishing
with impressive figures of 3/32. His performance ensured MI remained in the
hunt despite putting up a below-par total of 156.
Even though CSK eventually chased down the target with four
wickets in hand and five balls to spare, Vignesh’s stellar performance did not
go unnoticed. Following the match, Mumbai Indians owner Nita Ambani visited the
dressing room and presented him with an award for his outstanding debut.
Overwhelmed by Recognition
As soon as Nita Ambani called out his name for the award,
the entire Mumbai Indians squad erupted in cheers, acknowledging the young
spinner’s brilliant performance. Overwhelmed by the moment, Vignesh
respectfully touched Nita Ambani’s feet, a gesture reflecting his gratitude and
humble upbringing.
In his acceptance speech, Vignesh thanked the MI franchise
for believing in him and giving him the opportunity to play at the highest
level.
"I want to thank the MI franchise for giving me an
opportunity to play this match. I never thought I would get a chance to share
the field with such big players. I am very happy. Especially our captain, Surya
Bhai, was very supportive. That is why I never felt too much pressure,"
he said.
However, his heartfelt words prompted a lighthearted moment
in the dressing room. Stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav, known for his
fun-loving nature, playfully signaled him to stop "buttering" him up,
bringing laughter to the entire squad.
Who is Vignesh Puthur?
Vignesh Puthur’s journey to the IPL is nothing short of
inspiring. The son of an auto-rickshaw driver, he has worked his way up through
sheer determination and talent. Although he represented Kerala at the U-14 and
U-19 levels, he was relatively unknown in mainstream cricket until he caught
the attention of Mumbai Indians scouts during the 2024 Kerala Cricket League
while playing for Alleppey Ripples.
Puthur has also gained experience in the Tamil Nadu Premier
League, which further honed his skills. Recognizing his potential, Mumbai
Indians picked him up at the IPL mega auction for INR 30 lakh, a move that has
already started paying dividends.
MS Dhoni Takes Notice
Vignesh’s performance also caught the eye of the legendary
MS Dhoni. After the match, Dhoni was seen having a conversation with the young
spinner, sharing valuable insights and appreciating his efforts. For a budding
cricketer like Vignesh, receiving praise from one of cricket’s greatest minds
was undoubtedly a moment to cherish.
A Promising Future Ahead
While Mumbai Indians couldn’t secure a win against CSK, the
emergence of Vignesh Puthur adds depth to their spin department. His ability to
deliver under pressure and his fearless approach suggest that he could be a key
asset for the team in the future.
For Vignesh, this is just the beginning. With continuous
support from Mumbai Indians and guidance from experienced players, he has the
potential to carve a successful career in the IPL and beyond.
As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on this
talented young spinner, who has already proven that dreams do come true with
hard work and perseverance.
